Abstract:

A TLV-TWA of 100 ppm (525 mg/m3) is recommended for occupational exposure to Stoddard solvent, which is also referred to as mineral spirits or white spirits. This value is intended to minimize the potential for ocular and dermal irritation, defatting of the skin, nausea, narcosis, and possible kidney damage. Follicular dermatitis is reported to develop rapidly upon repeated immersion of the hands and forearms in Stoddard solvent. This compound is a mixture of straight and branched chain paraffins, naphthenes, and aromatic hydrocarbons that constitute four classes of solvent based on flash point of the mixtures: regular; 140 flash solvent; odorless solvent; and low end-point solvent. The TLV Documentation concerns the toxicology of the regular, the odorless, and the low endpoint mixtures. Sufficient data were not available to recommend Skin, SEN, or carcinogenicity notations or a TLV-STEL.

Abstract:

HEEP COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. Stoddard solvent is a mixture of straight and branched chain paraffins, naphthenes (cycloparaffins) and alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons. This guide summarizes significant physical properties of Stoddard solvent; hygienic standards (recommended maximal atmospheric concentration (threshold limit value), short exposure tolerance and atmospheric concentration immediately hazardous to life); toxic properties (following inhalation, skin contact, eye contact and ingestion); industrial hygiene practice (industrial uses, exposure evaluation, hazards and their recommended control) and medical information (including emergency procedures). Stoddard solvent is a CNS depressant (animals and humans) and an eye and skin irritant (human tests); dermatitis is the most common occupational health problem associated with the use of Stoddard solvent in industry. If the hydrocarbon is ingested and aspirated into the lungs at the time of ingestion, serious bronchopneumonia which may be fatal within 2-24 h occurs.
